Ebb n' Flow Yoga Community Inspiration features submissions by our beloved community. In this piece, Rick Nagengast shares his one-month journey of practicing yoga and the benefits he has already reaped. To quote Rick, "Just try it out!"
Ebb n' Flow Yoga: What do you enjoy most about yoga?
Rick: I actually look forward to coming! My original perception was that it would be similar to a gym workout - lots of sweat, exhaustion, and fatigue. As a result, I did not think that I would look forward to the next session.
However, Men's Yoga has been a good blend of quiet time, “feel good” stretching and camaraderie with the fellow men who attend. The stretching benefits are many: I feel looser. My body feels more responsive to my movement. I do not ache as much. I move more freely. Picking something up is not as painful as before.
As a senior citizen, the opportunity to do a “good thing” for my body in a non-threatening, peaceful environment with men of similar skills and age... it's a win- win.
Ebb n' Flow Yoga: What is your proudest yoga moment to-date?
Rick: By the third class, I set a goal of stretching. I want to bend over and touch the floor with my finger tips. And I'm only 2 inches away!
Ebb n' Flow Yoga: What do you enjoy about a class exclusively for men's yoga?
Rick: I like stretching in an all-men’s class because I am not distracted by the overall speed and flexibility of women. I do not feel obligated to keep up and compare myself. I simply stretch at my own pace and focus on gaining more mobility for the golf season.
Ebb n' Flow Yoga: Any advice for men?
Rick: Put away your old perceptions of what yoga is from three decades ago. Just try it out! You will have greater mobility and feel better about yourself. As we get older, the blend of stretching and strengthening seems to be a winning formula. For me, greater mobility through stretching is more important then strength building.
Rick, My heart grew a couple sizes bigger upon hearing the benefits yoga brings you and other gentlemen, particularly in our Men's Yoga class. I am so glad that there's a safe, fun, and fruitful environment for your on-going wellness journey. With appreciation, Joy
