Ebb n' Flow Yoga Community Inspiration features submissions by our beloved community. In this post, Heather shares her decision to try aerial and the benefits she has gained from making this a regular practice. Aerial yoga harmonizes her mind-body-spirit while ushering additional, beautiful discoveries. This post is a MUST read!
My journey with aerial yoga started over three years ago when my friend sparked my interest. While I was immediately interested, a month passed before I mustered the courage to sign up for a class. While I knew Ebb n’ Flow Yoga offered aerial yoga, I was nervous to try something by myself.
So I did my research. I looked at every page on the studio’s website, read all of the FAQs, studied the instructors’ bios, and watched Ebb n’ Flow Yoga’s video of yogis peacefully moving in and about the silks. Finally, I decided enough with my anxiety. I signed up and showed up.
While I felt better having done my research, the reality far exceeded my imagination.
My First Aerial Yoga Class
I remember walking into Ebb n’ Flow Yoga for the first time and thinking, “THIS was what a yoga studio should look and feel like!” There were lots of plants providing fresh air. The studio was immaculate and warm. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Kim, the studio owner, made me feel right at home.
And the aerial yoga class was fun! Not scary at all. At the end of my first class, a big smile stretched across my face as I lay in the silk for savasana. My body, mind and soul were in perfect agreement. This peace was something I knew I needed in my life regularly.
From One Class to Many
Since then, I have attended aerial yoga classes once or twice a week. And I haven’t looked back.
I love yoga in general, but there is something special about aerial yoga. The silk is a friend helping to support and guide me through the poses. I do not have to rely on my own body. I have the strength of the silk. In certain poses, namely hip hang and straddle, the silk literally supports our full weight, allowing us to rest and release our spine. When I miss a week for one reason or another, my back can tell.
From Aerial to the Mat, to 200-Hour Teacher Training
Through aerial, I have gained strength, flexibility and peace of mind. After many months of solely attending aerial classes, I decided to try some of the mat classes at Ebb n’ Flow Yoga. To my delight, I found that I could do so many more poses on the mat than I could before practicing aerial yoga. I developed the core strength needed for poses I was previously unable to do. This gave me the confidence to continue attending mat classes. Eventually, I signed up for the Embodyoga® Teacher Training to deepen my practice.
My Favorite Gateway Drug
I guess aerial yoga is my gateway drug? Well, it’s my favorite and probably always will be. It allows me to feel more free and playful than in mat classes. It teaches me to laugh at myself and not take myself so seriously.
Now Ebb n’ Flow Yoga is my second home. It’s a place where I can go to remind myself of who I am deep down - a joyful, divine being. I am so grateful to have this important community in my life.
It has been an honor being a special part of your practice. A gift. It is always a pleasure having you in class. Your smile lights up the room. I thank you for what you bring to class & the studio. Om shanti, Kim
