In class I often ask clients to shift their perspective from the many concerns off the mat to simply being in their bodies and breath. Allowing this shift to happen creates space in our busy minds and lives. I'm used to being go go go all the time, as many of my clients are, so my shift is gradual... each breath brings a bit more peace, slowly bringing awareness to the feeling of my mat, easing into the space.
This week I had the good fortune of trying aerial yoga with an amazing teacher I've known for a couple years. It was my first class and I was really excited to try! My energy was very high/excitable and it's a good thing my teacher was so grounded and calming in her energy.
Aerial yoga uses similar postures and alignment to mat based yoga, but often shifted upside down, sideways etc. My shift of perspective happened immediately, unlike on the mat, resulting in a few giggles and "woah,"s from myself! I described this rapid shift to my husband as "Completely wild!" You must immediately be present. In my experience it wasn't even possible to think of my go go go life because I merely had to balance, breathe, and attempt not to fall!
When you allow yourself to trust in the silks, your body, and your instruction from the teacher, you literally feel like you are flying! There's both the freeing sensation from gravity and a freeing sensation from your mind being present. As a beginner aerial yogi I had no idea what poses were coming next or where my body would end up. In a way that was really liberating, no autopilot, no expectations, your world actually flipped upside down! To me it was such a freeing, fun, exciting experience.
When I got home I kept relating it to the yoga practice I'm used to on my mat. Maybe see if next time you are on your mat (or in the air!) see if you can let it all go, really be in the moment, trust in yourself, and when you do.. Do you feel like you are flying?! :)
