MBSR Changed My Life 1/6/17
By Julie Crantz, Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® Teacher and Reiki Master
“Mindfulness is about being fully awake in our lives. It is about perceiving the exquisite vividness of each moment. We feel more alive. We also gain immediate access to our own powerful inner resources for insight, transformation, and healing.” -Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D
Ten years ago, I began my studies in mindfulness. Little did I know my decision to enroll in the MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) program back in 2007 would change my life in ways I never knew possible.
The MBSR program is an evidence-based program founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn, who is also the founding director of the UMASS Center for Mindfulness. The program meets once a week for 8 weeks and also includes an all-day session. In the program, a participant learns meditation practices including body scan awareness, breathing meditation, and mindful movement. The program also includes gentle stretching and mindful yoga. A participant learns how to bring mindfulness into daily activities such as eating. In the program, you are taught how to bring awareness to moments of stress to help bring recognition to what is actually happening. This allows you to step out of automatic pilot mode and into bringing choice in your response to situations.
The MBSR program is one of the best investments I have made for myself. The program profoundly changed my life and gave me the tools to cope with significant stress from a demanding job and to also deal with chronic pain. Ultimately the practice of mindfulness and meditation led me to see very clearly through a new lens and shift my career path to be more in line with my true self. When you meditate, you connect to who you truly are.
The MBSR program helped me to identify with my higher self and to become the witness to my own journey, without judgement. I have learned the adaptive qualities needed to help with stressful life situations. I have learned to love myself, to show compassion to others, to reduce my suffering, and this has brought me the freedom of peace.
The MBSR program orientation session meets 12pm on January 15 at Ebb n’ Flow Yoga in Northborough. The program is taught by the lovely Maria Neizvestnaya. Please take this opportunity for self-care. MBSR is a life changing program and I highly recommend this for everyone.
Peace, love, and light, Julie
“It is indeed a radical act of love just to sit down and be quiet for a time by yourself.” -Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D
